Katie Zacharia’s Brief Tenure as White House Press Secretary Comes to a Close

By Kathleen Etienne

Katie Zacharia’s brief tenure as White House Press Secretary ended Oct. 16, less than a week after President Donald Trump announced her appointment on Truth Social.

“She has an unblemished record of support and has been a loyal and brilliant supporter, right from the beginning. She is, likewise, a devoted fan and member of MAGA,” remarked President Trump on Truth Social. “She’s going to be, I think, terrific,” President Trump added.

Katie Zacharia worked briefly at the Department of Homeland Security in the public affairs department as a deputy assistant secretary. Zacharia also assumed the role of a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson following Tricia McLaughlin’s departure, the previous spokesperson for DHS. As the Department of Homeland Security spokesperson, Zacharia worked under Lauren Bis, who is now the senior deputy White House press secretary.

According to The New York Times, Katie Zacharia was a communications advisor to the Trump Media and Technology Group, which runs the platform where President Trump announced Zacharia’s designation, Truth Social.

According to NBC News, President Trump said that Zacharia had previously worked for his election campaigns, contributing to his efforts to win key swing states before officially joining the Trump administration.

The position has been vacant since Karoline Leavitt departed, leaving the position in August after the birth of her second child.

Zacharia stepped into the role of White House Press Secretary at a critical time for the Trump Administration as President Trump faces midterm season, and as the president attempts to ban three news organizations from White House grounds.

Karoline Leavitt, predecessor of Zacharia’s position, was frequently praised by the president. He even called her “one of the best White House Press Secretaries in the History of the Office”.

In a social media post, Katie Zacharia said Leavitt set a “high standard” and that she wanted to “continue delivering strong results for our Country and communicating to the American people the major wins that this Administration is making every single day”.

The White House Press Secretary serves as the head spokesperson for the President and the administration. The secretary’s role consists of sharing information with the general public about both the president and the president’s administration’s stance on national events and actions that impact the nation.

“As a college student, a press secretary influences my perception of a presidential administration because they are the direct representation for the entire presidential administration. How the press secretary acts, responds, and relays information to the public reflects the entirety of the presidential administration in either a positive or negative light,” said Tabitha Domingue, a student at Saint Peter’s University.

According to Business Insider, Zacharia earned her undergraduate degree in political science and government from Pepperdine University and attended law school at Pepperdine Caruso School of Law per her LinkedIn profile.

Immediately after Zacharia’s first White House press briefing, during a White House departure alongside President Trump, Zacharia was asked by a reporter in which state she passed the bar exam. President Trump gestured to Zacharia, prompting her to answer the question, to which she responded that she “moved to China”, as reported by ABC News.

When reporters followed up, Zacharia repeated to reporters that she “moved to China”.

Amid intense media scrutiny about her legal credentials, Zacharia later clarified in an interview that she interpreted the question as “Where were you after law school?”.

In an interview with Fox News, host Sean Hannity directly asked Zacharia if she did not pass the bar exam, despite attending law school.

“You went to Pepperdine Law School, but you did not pass the bar exam, correct?” asked Fox News host Sean Hannity, to which Zacharia replied, “Correct,”.

According to the New York Times, President Trump referred to her as an “attorney” in the social media post announcing her appointment.

Additionally, according to the New York Times, in the eight minutes Katie Zacharia spent reading from a script, she called on 3 reporters and mixed up the president with her husband, before what the press called ‘darting out of there’ after five and a half minutes of the question-and-answer portion.

“Katie Zacharia seemed to exude her nervousness and unpreparedness to the public with how she did not maintain eye contact whatsoever with reporters, had extremely long pauses, and sounded like she was reading from a script. In comparison, from the few times I’ve seen Leavitt on the news, she seemed well rehearsed based on her composure and how she addressed the public,” added Tabitha Domingue.

Footage of the briefing circulated on social media platforms, including X and TikTok.

“I don’t really associate myself with political issues or keep up with things happening in the government. However, after seeing videos of the new White House Press Secretary on my social media feed, it’s clearly evident that she is unengaged when answering questions. She only answered a few questions out of the entire briefing, which is completely unprofessional,” said sophomore Dalia Harami.

In the wake of ongoing media condemnation from news outlets such as The New Republic, after five days of holding the title, Katie Zacharia has officially left the position, according to CNN.

While recounting his conversation with the former press secretary, the president told reporters that he advised Katie by saying, “Honestly, if I were you, I’d reconsider.”

In her own social media post, Katie wrote that it “was an honor to work for” President Trump.

According to the New York Times, the president informed reporters that Katie may continue to work for him in a “more pleasant form”.

With Leavitt’s departure and Zacharia’s exit, the White House is still left without a press secretary. President Trump told reporters that “A lot of people want the job,” as reported by CNN, as the Trump administration searches for a replacement.
