Two Hours of Learning: Could AI Change The Classroom?

By Isabella Ortega

Alpha School is challenging traditional education with AI-powered academics and hands-on workshops, raising questions about how technology could shape the future of learning.

Imagine completing your core academic lessons in about two hours and spending the rest of the school day developing practical skills. According to Alpha School, its learning model uses AI-powered programs to help students finish their core academics in about two hours, leaving more time for hands-on workshops.

Founded in Austin, Texas, in 2014, Alpha School uses adaptive educational software to help students work through subjects at their own pace. Rather than following the same lessons at the same pace, students work through academic subjects based on their individual needs. The rest of the school day focuses on workshops focused on skills such as leadership, entrepreneurship, teamwork, and problem-solving.

Alpha’s approach, however, raises an important question: Can AI make learning more effective, or could relying on technology create new challenges for students? While AI can be useful in the classroom, some students worry whether or not relying too much on it could affect how they learn.

“Many students may take advantage of it by simply copying answers instead of taking the time to comprehend what they are learning,” said sophomore Kristina Shyshova.

Kristina also worried that relying on technology could reduce opportunities for classmates to socialize and collaborate. However, she supported Alpha’s emphasis on practical skills and suggested that traditional schools could use AI to explain concepts or locate credible sources without letting it complete assignments for students.

Another student saw both advantages and disadvantages to AI in education. They explained that the technology can help students learn independently, but excessive reliance could discourage them from solving problems on their own.

“I think it could honestly go both ways. AI can help students become more independent because they can learn things at their own pace and get help when they’re confused,” said senior Moteleola Sanni-Ajibola.

Moteleola also said she preferred Alpha’s schedule because it offers hands-on activities and opportunities to develop useful skills. She explained that practical learning could make school more enjoyable and help students feel more excited about attending.

If their school adopted Alpha’s methods, she would definitely want more hands-on activities, greater flexibility, and time to explore personal interests. However, she would still keep teachers and regular classroom discussions because learning alongside others is easier to understand.

Both students saw the benefits in Alpha’s approach, especially its focus on hands-on learning and allowing students to work at their own pace. However, they also emphasized the importance of using AI responsibly without losing opportunities to think independently and work with classmates.

As AI becomes a bigger part of education, Alpha School offers an example of how technology could reshape traditional classrooms. Its model emphasizes personalized academics and practical skills, but questions remain about how schools can introduce new technology without sacrificing meaningful learning experiences.

For students and educators, the bigger question may not be whether AI belongs in education, but how it can be used responsibly while keeping learning meaningful.
