Inside the Ed Sheeran and Macklemore Controversy
A controversy between singers Ed Sheeran and Macklemore has drawn attention after Macklemore was removed from the remaining U.S. dates of Sheeran’s Loop Tour. The situation began after Macklemore made pro-Palestinian comments during his opening performance at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, bringing discussions about music, politics, and freedom of expression into the spotlight.
Macklemore performed at MetLife Stadium on September 4 and 5 as an opening act for Ed Sheeran. During his performance, he expressed support for Palestinians and said “Free Palestine” while discussing the situation in Gaza. Videos of the performance spread online, leading to criticism from some Jewish advocacy groups and other people that came to see the concert, while others supported Macklemore for speaking up about an important issue.
The controversy grew when Macklemore was removed from the remaining U.S. shows on September 14. According to the Messina Touring Group, the promoter for Ed Sheeran’s U.S tour, venues scheduled for upcoming concerts said they would not allow the shows to continue with Macklemore on the line up. The company said that after discussions with stakeholders, Macklemore would no longer perform at the remaining dates.
Ed Sheeran later addressed the controversy, explaining that he wanted the tour to continue for the fans, musicians, and crew members who depended on the shows for work. He also said that he generally wants his concert to focus on bringing people together rather than becoming political forums.
The decision also affected other performers on the tour. Several supporting acts, including Finneas, Luke Graham, Aaron Rowe, and Beoga, announced that they would no longer participate. Their decisions were made after Macklemore’s removal, with the artists expressing support for Palestinians and concerns about artists being able to speak about political or humane issues.
The controversy has also sparked discussion among students on whether or not musicians should be able to express their beliefs while performing. One student believes artists should use their platforms to discuss important issues.
“I do believe that musicians should be able to express their views anywhere no matter where. People with a larger platform should definitely use their platform to spread what’s going on in this world and they shouldn’t get penalized for what they think,” said sophomore Isabella Palacios.
Another student shared a similar perspective, saying that musicians have the right to express their opinions during performances.
“In my opinion, musicians should be able to express their political or social views during concerts because everyone has the right to their own opinions,” said sophomore at Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Senior High School, Jaden Rojas.
Sheeran later addressed the situation during his September 19 concert in Philadelphia. He apologized for how he handled the situation and spoke about the situation in Gaza, while also discussing the October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel. His comments added another layer to the discussion surrounding his tour and Macklemore’s removal.
As of September 26, the situation has continued beyond the tour. Macklemore announced a new series of concerts called the “Free Palestine” tour, with the first shows scheduled for Dublin, Paris, and London in October. He said proceeds from the concert will go to organizations supporting Palestinians.
The controversy has raised many questions about how much political expression belongs in entertainment and how much artists, venues, promoters, and audiences should respond when those views become part of a performance. For students who follow music and social media, the situation can also show how quickly a concert moment can become a much larger public discussion.
