Beneath the Skin

Rachel Vasco, Class of 2027 Junior

“This work confronts the idea of vulnerability by peeling back every outer layer and exposing what lies beneath. On one page, the figure shows the back — clawing at the skin as the spine and pelvis emerge, blurring the line between body and bone. On the opposite page, the front is revealed: a shirt lifted away not to show beauty, but to expose ribs, organs, and a hollow chest. By pairing flesh with skeletal diagrams, the piece reduces the body to its rawest truth — fragile, mortal, and unprotected. It is a meditation on what it means to be seen beyond surface appearances, a reminder that beneath every exterior lies something delicate and real.”
