Miami Lakes Educational Center earns Platinum STEM designation

By Edisleibys Cuesta

Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) has earned the distinction of becoming a Platinum STEM school, making it one of only two high schools in Miami-Dade County Public Schools to achieve this level. Gaining the Gold designation for five consecutive years has allowed MLEC to achieve platinum status for the 2025-2026 school year.

This award demonstrates MLEC’s long-standing commitment to science, technology, engineering, and math. The school emphasizes STEM values by combining strong academics with career-focused programs, enabling students to graduate with both a diploma and industry-recognized certifications.

“It is a tremendous honor. It speaks volumes to the work that teachers are doing, because this is not one, or two, three teachers. This requires, like, everybody pitching in. … We were the first, we will continue to be platinum, and I look forward to the day that we’ve become titanium,” said Principal Fernandez.

Getting Platinum status didn’t happen overnight. MLEC has worked for years to build high achievement in both academics and technical training. The school offers academies in areas like health sciences, information technology, and trade programs, where students learn skills that can help them in college or in the workforce.

“I feel really proud that my school has become a STEM Platinum School because it shows the hard work and effort put in by both the students and teachers,” said senior Steeven Martinez

At the same time, students are expected to meet high academic standards. In recent years, MLEC has consistently scored among the best schools in Florida, earning an “A” rating and ranking high on state tests.

“I’m very proud to be working here, and I hope that all the students are aware of where are they sitting right now,” said Dr Mendez, head of the science department at MLEC.

MLEC’s Platinum STEM recognition is more than just an award; it’s a sign of the school’s future, and the expectations it holds for future generations. By combining hands-on learning with strong academics, MLEC is showing other schools that anything can be achieved with the right tools in education.

Tools such as student activities, well-informed teachers, and a friendly environment can help with the success not only of the school but also of its students. This milestone proves that innovation, dedication, and opportunity can all come together in one place, setting the bar higher for other high schools in the district.
