The Harbinger and Junior State of America (JSA) hosted a mock presidential debate and a mock senatorial debate four days before Election Day and the student audience was more than interested. They were involved.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Many students may not be old enough to vote, but they are definitely not politically apathetic! <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MLECdebates?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MLECdebates<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/eo5mjS5Qoj\">pic.twitter.com\/eo5mjS5Qoj<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Alex (@ReboredoAlex) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ReboredoAlex\/status\/794555594917216256?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 4, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Gathering in the school\u2019s auditorium, students watched and listened attentively as Carolina Espinal, a senior in the journalism strand of the Cambridge Academy who was the moderator for the debates, introduced the candidates and listed the rules. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Beforehand, a coin toss was used to determine who would go first and the senatorial debate began. Dru Barcelo represented Senator Marco Rubio (R) and Christopher Justiniano represented Congressman Patrick Murphy (D).<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Senatorial debated hosted by our JSA club <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MLECDebates?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MLECDebates<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gsbkAYIGhC\">pic.twitter.com\/gsbkAYIGhC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Aisha (@_ayeeesha_) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/_ayeeesha_\/status\/794519269279043584?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 4, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">The two candidates began with their opening statements before discussing their endorsements for the presidential candidates from their respective parties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Questions regarding climate change, gun control, abortion, and education followed as Barcelo and Justiniano answered as the candidates they represented would. Students used Twitter to ask questions using #MLECDebates and Daniela Morales, manning the live Twitter desk, relayed their questions.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">To Trump: Since you are against Common Core, what would you propose as a replacement? <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MLECdebates?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MLECdebates<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Kat\u2716\ufe0f-\u2716\ufe0f (@kat_aox) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kat_aox\/status\/794526893076836353?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 4, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">\u201cGod willing, I will commit to a six year term,\u201d said Rubio during his closing statement before criticizing his opponent for his lack of experience. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">\u201cI\u2019m here to become a Senator. I am not here to be a CPA,\u201d Murphy countered in his own closing statement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">The two shook hands and walked off the stage and then it was time for the presidential debate. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump was represented by Cesar Zafra and Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton was represented by Emily Norat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/matt_MJO\/status\/794521623969677312<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">After the opening statements, the moderator asked questions about gun control, anti-ISIS policies, immigration, national security, and LGBT rights, giving each candidate two minutes to respond. In between, questions from Twitter and from the audience were answered. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Popular lines from each candidate included Clinton\u2019s \u201cI\u2019m sure his shirt and tie were not made in America,\u201d while discussing outsourcing jobs and Trump\u2019s \u201cI\u2019m not trying to make Trump great again, I\u2019m trying to make America great again,\u201d when asked how he felt about losing support from several Republican leaders. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Both candidates finished with closing statements and some students voiced their opinion on the 2016 elections and the mock debate.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Congratulations to our debaters, who represented the political candidates! <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MLECDebates?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MLECDebates<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/EKui0N1oRA\">pic.twitter.com\/EKui0N1oRA<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; MLEC (@MLECJaguars) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MLECJaguars\/status\/794532325040201729?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 4, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">\u201cIt gave me a broader idea of what Clinton and Trump really stand for and what they are willing to do for the country,\u201d said Dominique Gras, a senior at MLEC. \u201cI was very confused about what Murphy and Rubio stood for and this cleared the air for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Students also shared what they wished to have seen in the actual presidential debates. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">\u201cI liked that there was peace between Clinton and Trump [in the mock debate]. I feel that they are very immature in the actual debates. There\u2019s a lot of hostility between the two. It would be nice to see more peace between the two of them,\u201d said Gras. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">\u201cI would love to hear them talk about Common Core and teachers and about mental health reform and how it ties into the second amendment,\u201d added Tatiana Arevalo, another student at MLEC.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/_carocaro\/status\/794591660038569984<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Those who volunteered to represent the views of the presidential and senatorial candidates did so because they saw the importance of informing the public: \u201cIt\u2019s important to inform the public because students like myself need to know about what the future can be like because of our own voices,\u201d said Norat. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">All the mock debaters shared that they looked at each party\u2019s platform and their candidates websites to learn about their stances and come up with rebuttals. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">\u201cI watched and rewatched and re-rewatched the debates and I ventured into the Republican platform for issues that Rubio had barely voiced his opinion on. I also did my homework and found all of my opponent\u2019s weaknesses and attempted to exploit them,\u201d said Barcelo. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Despite all the research they did for the debate, Zafra learned more from the experience: \u201cI learned that students are less apathetic than I believed them to be. It amazed me to see how excited and energetic people were during the debates. As for myself, I learned that preparation goes a long way,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Jaguars in line to cast their ballot for our mock election <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MLECDebates?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MLECDebates<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Election2016?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Election2016<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Qn48E1eXfI\">pic.twitter.com\/Qn48E1eXfI<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; MLEC (@MLECJaguars) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MLECJaguars\/status\/794557766308392964?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 4, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Hours after the debates ended, during lunch break, students were given the opportunity to cast a mock vote for both President of the United States and Florida\u2019s next senator. Votes were counted and it was announced that Hillary Clinton won with 80.6 percent of votes and Trump lost with 19.4 percent. Patrick Murphy won with 54.4 percent of the vote to Marco Rubio\u2019s 42.4 percent.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">These are the results of our <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MLECDebates?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MLECDebates<\/a> today!
