Just like a feud between cats and dogs, the fight between poachers and the rest of the world will never end. Subsequently, next week, the United States Fish and Wildlife Services have enforced the destruction of over six tons of illegal African elephant ivory, hoping to send a message that ivory, rhinoceros horns, and other illicit animal products hold no value.<\/p>\n

With the coming of this destruction it\u2019s worrisome that perhaps this action will result in a counterattack bring forth a larger demand for the ivory which has \u201csuddenly\u201d become an uncommon item in the black market.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom 1980, African elephant population has decreased by 65 percent from 1.2 million to 420,000 elephants in 2012\u2019\u2019 said Mary Dixon, a spokeswoman with the Wildlife Conservation Society. WCS estimates 96 elephants are killed each day in Africa, about 35,000 were lost in 2012 only.<\/p>\n

\u2018\u2019I understand that the demand for ivory and other illegal animal products is a growing industry filled with many consumers. Eventually, like fossil fuels these products will soon disappear along with the rest of the elephant population if the poaching continued, but by just destroying the ivory it will only encourage the poachers to kill off more elephants for the increased demand of ivory,\u2019\u2019 said Pablo Alonso, a junior at MLEC in the Health Academy.<\/p>\n

These poachers are brazen and brutal; destroying tons of ivory will only add oil to the flames. This isn\u2019t the first method attempted to hold back the poachers. Kenya launched its own national awareness campaign to save its elephants. In addition to former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and daughter Chelsea who revealed their own campaign (an $80-million, three-year partnership with the WCS focused on illegal ivory).<\/p>\n

Kenya also recently implemented tactics used against drug warfare such as bringing in canines to patrol airports, sniffing out suitcases possibly filled with the ivory. Sadly, some poachers still slip by either by concealing the ivory within cases stuffed with mattress cuttings or disguising them as macadamia nuts.<\/p>\n

The tusks of elephants are enlarged teeth embedded within the animal\u2019s skull, and its removal is likely to lead to death. As a result, poachers usually kill them on the spot because they can be quite dangerous when provoked. The thought of tranquilizers is not used often because it takes a lot of effort to bring elephants down when the true focus is only on its teeth.<\/p>\n

The United States is the second-largest consumer, after China, of illicit animal products like ivory, rhinoceros horns, and tiger blood. The value of ivory has even surpassed the price of gold in the black markets. Ivory sold for about $1,000 per pound on the streets of Beijing just last year.<\/p>\n

As the population of elephants and many other endangered species depletes due to increased cutthroat efforts from poachers let\u2019s hope we don\u2019t have to put African elephants on our list of extinct species.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
