Inside SGA: How Student Government Picked This Year’s Homecoming Theme
SGA is hosting a night to remember. With it being homecoming season, SGA has checked off sending students the date, venue, and theme. Homecoming is at the Intercontinental Doral, with the theme being Hip-Hop Revolution. But amongst the many themes such as Carnival or A Night in Paris. What made SGA pick this one specifically?
Homecoming is often a key part of high school culture, with it being one of the many send-offs for seniors. MLEC students can find homecoming on the checklist for the Class of 2027 in front of Building 3. This moment must be important to our seniors.
“ Last year I was a class officer, and for our junior week we had picked a lot of decade themes, and I think that inspired us to decide this year,” said SGA communications director, senior Gwen Coba.
Inspiration is often a key to new ideas. Our seniors are hoping to leave their mark on homecoming this year by picking a theme that they loved last year. But being inspired by a week’s theme from last year is not the only reason SGA picked Hip-Hop Revolution as this year’s homecoming theme.
“It actually starts probably the year before, sometime around the spring we start floating different types of ideas and I’m very big on legacy, and I think that one of the things that defines legacy is being timeless,” said activities director, Mrs. Cordova.
The four years seniors spend at MLEC, their first and last homecoming is often their most memorable. While graduation marks the end of their time at MLEC, homecoming is one of the last moments the senior class will all be together. As if the start of tying a bow on senior year.
But this year’s homecoming is also always the freshmen’s first homecoming. Class of 2027 gets the opportunity to leave their mark on Class of 2030.
“The Jaguar preview we saw, a lot of freshmen started talking about. Hey, I like this school. I like what they offer. I’m excited for the events. That enthusiasm is what gets everybody excited,” said SGA president, senior Alejandra Mendez.
Homecoming also brings up the idea of what to wear. Especially for a time period that none of the students were born in.
“Like, there’s different elements that they can incorporate that goes with the theme, but doesn’t necessarily make them uncomfortable,” said SGA vice president, senior Melissa Marquez.
Homecoming is a time for students to enjoy themselves and make memories that they can look back on and enjoy. However, students who have gone to last year’s homecoming would realize that the location changed. It was hosted at the Intercontinental Marriott. But this change was not made out of luxury but necessity.
“ So we hosted, I think I want to say, either 3 or 4 homecomings at the Marriott, although Mr. Fernandez and I did make comments about how we were maybe outgrowing it. But aside from that, essentially what made us do the ultimate change is that the venue was double-booked,” said activities director, Mrs. Cordova.
So, when dressing up to the theme of Hip-Hop Revolution. Students can either go all the way in on the 90s theming or show up in what they find comfortable. School is often stressful or even boring. Homecoming is one of the many times students can go wild and have fun with friends.
“Yep, I’ll say it’s really cool. I like it; I feel like the topics now, like the aesthetic now, are way better than what we did when we were freshmen,” said sophomore Nicole Reyes-Grande.
Homecoming may seem like a frivolous event to some, but it is an event that lets people leave their mark and be timeless. Homecoming may not be for some students, but it is a chance to connect and enjoy the time you have with your fellow classmates.
