Finding Your Place in the Den: MLEC’s Club Rush
On Friday, September 11, students had the opportunity to explore the many clubs offered at MLEC during this year’s Club Rush. The event brought students and club members together to learn about different organizations and find new ways to become involved in the school community.
Club Rush gave students a chance to walk around the gym and discover what each club had to offer. Club officers introduced their organizations, explained their activities, and answered questions from students who were interested in joining. This allowed students to learn more about the clubs they may not have known about before.
With over 40 clubs and organizations at MLEC that are available, students could find different activities based on their interests, whether they were interested in academics, sports, performing arts, community service, leadership, and more. For new students especially, Club Rush provided an opportunity to meet new people and become more connected with the school.
SGA members played an important role in preparing for the event. They worked with the different clubs to make sure everything was ready and helped set up the gym and decorations before students arrived.
“We coordinated with all the clubs to make sure that all their things were in place. We set up the whole gym and did all the decorations,” said SGA treasurer, sophomore Nia Pierre.
According to Nia, Club Rush is important because it encourages students to become involved early and take advantage of the opportunities available at MLEC. With so many organizations available, students can find groups where they can meet others who share their interests and participate in activities outside of their regular classes.
SGA hoped that this event would encourage students to get involved sooner rather than waiting until later in the school year. Getting involved early on can help make students feel more comfortable at school and make the most of their high school experience.
For many students, Club Rush was also a chance to discover clubs they may not have considered before. Walking around the gym allowed students to be able to compare different clubs, ask questions, and see which activities interested them the most.
“Club Rush was nice, but very crowded,” said freshman Mattias Litano. “My favorite part was getting free candy, and I was also able to join esports and music club.”
Mattias explained that Club Rush can help students by discovering activities they are interested in while also finding opportunities to earn community service hours. The event also gave students a chance to interact with the club members and learn what was to be expected before joining.
Beyond Club Rush, students will have more opportunities to participate in school activities throughout the year. The school’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebration will take place on Friday, September 18th, allowing students to come together and celebrate their school community.
Although Club Rush only lasted for part of the school day, it introduced students to the many ways they can become more involved at MLEC. Whether students joined a club or simply explored their options, Club Rush showed students that getting involved can start with something as simple as finding an activity they enjoy.
