Europe’s Extreme Heat Wave and Wildfire Crisis
All across Europe, temperatures have risen to dangerous levels while wildfires destroy the land and disrupt communities. The widespread drought and extreme heat created the perfect conditions for these fires to spread. However, this represents a larger issue than what’s currently happening in Europe. It shows how the climate is changing and that efforts need to be made.
Throughout the summer, countries in Europe including, Greece, France, Spain, and Italy have faced dangerous wildfire conditions as a long-running drought has caused dry forests and farmland which makes it easier for fires to ignite. These conditions also include 100 degree temperatures and strong winds have made the fires cover large areas and made it difficult for emergency crews to contain the fires.
One of the hardest hit countries has been Greece. Firefighters have worked for days to control the large wildfires near populated areas. Thousands of people, including residents and tourists, have been forced to evacuate as the flames threatened homes, businesses, and other natural areas. Firefighting crews have been using a variety of methods to contain the spread of the fires including helicopters, jets, and hundreds of firefighters on the ground.
France is another country that has been devastated by the fires, having some of the largest in decades damaging their forests and communities. A similar combination of extreme heat and dry conditions has created this environment that allows the fires to spread and grow much farther and faster than usual.
Now many scientists and officials are trying to find out what exactly made all these fires so extreme. Climate change is one of the major factors relating to increasing wildfire risks. Rising global temperatures create longer and more intense heat waves which dry out plants and soil. Climate change may not directly cause every wildfire, but the conditions they create allow the fires to reach these levels.
“These wildfires show the real impacts of climate change and remind us that we need to take stronger action to reduce emissions and protect the environment,” said sophomore Rene Chacon.
Another major cause as mentioned is drought. A healthy, hydrated forest can often effectively contain and slow the spread of wildfires, however a dry forest becomes fuel for it and allows the fires to move quickly and unpredictably.
The damage caused by the wildfires isn’t the only problem. Their effects can extend far beyond where the fire is, as smoke from wildfires can travel hundreds of miles, affecting the air quality in the surrounding areas. Poor air quality can create several concerns, especially among children, the elderly, and people with respiratory conditions like asthma.
Wildfires also cause economic challenges as millions of dollars are spent through controlling the fires and rebuilding damaged areas. It also causes challenges in agriculture through burnt crops and in tourism through damaging popular destinations.
These fires are more than just a current disaster affecting European countries, they are a reflection of the condition of our world. They should act as a wake-up call to make the necessary changes and precautions to prevent future wildfires from getting so severe and to prepare in case it does.
“If I was in a position of power I would use this major issue with flames to help advise and encourage citizens to change their ways and use greener methods of living. Next would be the change of energy creation from non-renewable to renewable, cleaner options of energy sources that won’t result in issues in air quality and reduce our impact on global warming,” said sophomore Kevin Charles.
