Basketball Jam Opens for the 2025-2026 Season
On September 8, Basketball Jam opened in the gym for anybody that wanted to play. Students from all grades were more than excited to participate in this year’s tournament as it is one of the largest and most entertaining events held at MLEC. It is known for being held during the week of Homecoming and is the first sports tournament in the school year.
Before the semifinals, the school gives each team two weeks to prepare themselves.. They all practice by playing matches against each other to get an idea of the playing style each team has. Some grades have different teams, so they have to go head to head to see who will represent their class in the semi-finals.
Last year’s tournament was full of excitement and competition. Class of 2025 won last year’s tournament, beating Class of 2026 in the finals after a close match. The Seniors from last year celebrated like never before, while the juniors couldn’t do anything but watch. However now that they are seniors, they are more than determined to make sure they bring the trophy home with them.
“It feels unreal that this would be my last year to play in the Basketball Jam one last time,” said Senior Eduardo Maradiaga. “It would have been nice to win against the seniors last year, but you know things happen for a reason, but I know for a fact class of 2026 is gonna take this one home.”
Still, the other classes have other plans, with students like junior Manuel Toribio planning to steal that victory from the seniors.
“My team lost against the seniors from last year in the semi finals so we couldn’t even qualify for the final game. But this is a new year and I’m planning to take the win and put on a show for everyone,” said Manuel.
This year’s Basketball Jam is one that people can not miss. Not only will it be a great time to spend time with friends, but it will definitely have people on the edge of their seats. All the players are fired up and are willing to do anything to win the tournament. But at the end of the day, the trophy will always go to the person that wants it more than anybody else.
