Battle of the Artists: Artfight Opens a Fun Platform for Artists
Artfight is a global event hosted on a website familiar to most artists. Every year since 2007, there have been two teams chosen who are meant to “fight” each other by drawing the most characters of the opposing team. This year, the chosen teams were Fossils against Crystals. The purpose of this event is a get-together for all artists to have fun and practice their skills.
Joining ArtFight is super simple. You set up your profile by creating an about me and character reference sheets so that you’re prepared to get attacked. Then you have the entire month of July to make as many creative attacks as you can.
There are a variety of different ways that you can attack someone’s character; some attacks have even gone as far as to carve a drawing into cheese. When they say ALL forms of art are accepted, it’s not an exaggeration.
Attacks are the drawings you make for other people on the opposite team. Friendly fire is when you draw someone’s character from the same team as yours. Though it won’t give you as many points, it’s still a fun feature, especially since the whole point is to have fun and draw what you like. Defenses are the attacks that you receive. After getting an attack, the participant can “revenge” the artist by drawing one of their characters in return.
“I think Art Fight is good for the art community. It brings so many artists together to do what they love and inspires them to create. The competition aspect fuels artists to push themselves and potentially get outside of their comfort zone and grow in their art. It also puts so much art out into the world each year, not just drawings, either, crafts, animations, cosplays, 3d art, etc,” said senior Samson Cabrera-Gonzalez
With each attack, you earn points that contribute to the winning team at the end of the month. It’s important to understand that there are rules, however, and that every artist must follow those rules to keep it fair and fun. Since Artfight is for artists worldwide, there are different levels of skill, ranging from beginner to intermediate to professional artists. This diversity is what makes ArtFight so unique and heartwarming for the art community.
“I wouldn’t say my skill level is beyond wow and such, but I would say it’s decent and at least pleasing to the eyes, so I decided to join ArtFight for the second year! I have been drawing for a long time, and I feel like my attacks were just spot on this year. But I loved my defenses. Especially because it allowed me to have more art for my other characters, which I loved,” said junior Mia Villegas.
After a month of moderators counting attacks and making sure that they were all fair, they announced Team Crystals as the winner in August of 2025. It was a really close call throughout the whole month of August, with the scores going back and forward between 49% and 51%. Congratulations, Team Crystals!
